Esports Events to Watch This Week (August 10 – 16)

Want to know what esports events you absolutely need to check out this week? We’ve got you covered! Every week our staff pick some of the biggest events from all across esports that we think you need to watch.

This is one of the best times of the year to be an esports fan with almost every major competition entering their postseason. The LCS and LPL playoffs begin this week giving League of Legends fans some incredible matches to watch. Playoff results directly qualify teams for the World Championship later this year making them more important than ever. The Overwatch League is heading into its final weeks of regular-season competition as teams gear up for their own postseason. The DreamHack Summer Open European finals take place this weekend as does the NBA2K League’s “The Ticket” – an elimination style tournament that will decide who the 10th and final team in their playoffs will be.

LCS Summer 2020 Playoffs Round 1 + Round 2

Release Date: TSM vs Golden Guardians
Thursday, August 13th - 4PM EST / 1PM PST

The very first match of the 2020 Summer Playoffs is between the 4th and 5th seeded teams – TSM and Golden Guardians. Both of these teams struggled at the start of the split but were able to improve tremendously over the course of the regular season. Now, with their ticket to the World Championship at stake, both of these teams will be vying to get the very first playoff victory of the season. It is important to note that both of these teams are in the Upper Bracket of the playoffs, meaning losing on Thursday won’t disqualify them immediately but it will make their road that much more difficult. This is a difficult matchup to predict heading into it, making it an exciting way to begin what is sure to be an incredible month of Playoff competition.

LPL Summer 2020 Playoffs Round 1 + QuarterFinals

Release Date: FunPlus Phoenix vs VictoryFive
Thursday, August 13th - 5AM EST / 2AM PST

With China having won the previous two World Championships the LPL Summer Playoffs are set to be one of the most exciting esports events of the year. There is a strong argument to be made that whoever can win these playoffs will also be able to secure themselves the title of World Champion, making this the one regional postseason that you absolutely cannot miss. The playoffs begin this year with FPX, last year’s World Champion, fighting to stay alive in this single elimination bracket against VictoryFive, a team that performed far better in this split’s regular season. This series will determine who moves to quarters and who sees their World Championship dreams taken from them. With so much on the line, it will undoubtedly be worth getting up early to watch.

NBA2K League The Ticket

Release Date: T-Wolves vs TBD
Saturday, August 15th - 9PM EST / 6PM PST

The NBA2K League has wrapped up the regular season and now await the final team that will qualify for the playoffs determined this weekend. The Ticket is a single-elimination tournament with every team outside of the top 9 participating. The lower their standing at the end of the season the more games they have to win in order to secure the 10th and final playoff spot. As the team that ended the season in 10th place, the T-Wolves are automatically placed in the final match of the tournament and will eagerly await whoever emerges from the rest of the competition to challenge them. Teams have worked so hard all year long to qualify for the playoffs and now its time for them to prove who truly deserves that final spot.

Overwatch League 2020 Week 28

Release Date: Atlanta Reign vs Paris Eternal
Saturday, August 15th - 3PM EST / 12PM PST

As the regular season winds down and teams gear up for the playoffs matches between potential playoff opponents become increasingly important. This is the case in this showdown between the 4th seed Paris Eternal and 8th seed Atlanta Reign. Both teams have performed well this season but there is a large gap in the standings between the 8th seed and the seeds above them in total wins. This opportunity to play against the Eternal is an excellent opportunity for the Reign to test themselves heading into the playoffs while proving to everyone that they are not a team that can be easily dismissed.

DreamHack Summer Open: Europe

Release Date: Grand Finals
Sunday, August 9th - 10AM EST / 7AM PST

The DreamHack Summer Open has been a fantastic event for the CSGO community that comes to a close this weekend. The Grand Final takes place on Sunday morning and will determine the best team in Europe. The whole weekend will have some incredible games but if you are only going to tune into one match make sure this is the one you do not miss. Notable teams still in the competition include BIG, Complexity, and OG.
