Want to know what esports events you absolutely need to check out this week? We’ve got you covered! Every week our staff pick some of the biggest events from all across esports that we think you need to watch.
Get ready for one of the most exciting weeks of esports all year long! Both the Call of Duty League and the NBA2K League are heading into their championship weekend. After both leagues went through long and grueling seasons there will be only one team remaining in each league come this weekend and they will officially be crowned the 2020 champions. ESL ONE Cologne Online is also wrapping up this weekend with both the European and North American championship matches happening this Sunday. Last but certainly not least is the continued playoff action in Western League of Legends. Both Europe and North America are entering the later rounds of their playoffs and both regions now only one World Championship spot remaining. Put all of this together and you have one week of esports that you absolutely cannot miss!
Highlight Match: Cloud9 Vs Team SoloMidSaturday August 29th - 4PM EST / 1PM PST
This is the match that will decide who will be the third and final team to represent North America at the World Championship. These two teams have had a long and storied rivalry making a match with so much on the line even more intense. Cloud9 was by far the best team throughout the first three quarters of the year but have struggled in recent weeks making this series all the more interesting. TSM has been wildly inconsistent over the course of the split but no doubt have the firepower to pull out the victory in this series themselves. Cloud9 losing this series and failing to qualify for the World Championship would shock the entire region, but that is exactly what makes this a series you absolutely cannot afford to miss.
Highlight Match: MAD Lions Vs Schalke 04Friday August 28th - Noon EST / 9 AM PST
Just as our key matchup in North America, this series will also determine who the fourth and final European representative at the World Championship will be. Both of these teams have incredibly interesting storylines making it a shame they both can’t qualify after the season they gave us. MAD Lions is a young team filled with rookie players who have rapidly established themselves as some of the most individually skilled players in the region. It is rare for such a young team to demonstrate such poise and skill even under pressure but Mad Lions have done just that proving they will be a top team in Europe for years to come. Schalke on the other hand had a disastrous first three-quarters of the season but in the latter half of the summer split went on a miracle run defeating everyone to sneak into the playoffs. They continued this stretch of victories into the playoffs by knocking out SK last weekend and now they have a chance to secure their spot at the World Championship.
Highlight Match: Grand FinalsSunday August 30th - 12:30 PM EST / 9:30 AM PST
Despite being forced to move online due to the pandemic ESL ONE has still been the tournament we all know and love providing some incredibly high-level CSGO gameplay from the best teams around the world. After two long weeks of competition, the champion will finally be crowned Sunday afternoon officially making them the best team in Europe and by logical extension, the World. If you need even more reason to tune into this final series there is the added bonus that the North American finals will be taking place immediately after the European ones conclude. This will be a Sunday afternoon featuring the highest level of CSGO in the world and as a result, you won’t want to miss it.
Highlight Match: Wizards Vs WarriorsFriday August 28th - 7 PM EST / 4PM PST
After 13 weeks of regular-season competition, 4 tournaments in the middle of the season and an intense two weeks of playoffs, the finals for the NBA2K League are finally here. The Wizards shocked everyone last weekend when they took down the undefeated Raptors Uprising in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, on the other side of the bracket, the Warriors pulled off an upset of their own taking down the Jazz en route to their finals appearance. Two weeks ago few people if anybody would have predicted that these would be the two teams meeting in the finals but now here they are proving that anything truly is possible. If you were only going to tune into one series of NBA2K all year long this would be the one to watch.
Highlight Match: Grand FinalsSunday August 30th - 4PM EST / 1PM PST
The inaugural season of the Call of Duty League is coming to an end this weekend with a final set of playoff games that will ultimately determine the first-ever CDL Champion. The Atlanta FaZe came into the playoffs as the top seed and are still looking strong in the Winner’s bracket finals. The other three teams still remaining are Dallas Empire, Chicago Huntsmen and London Royal Ravens. Ultimately only one of these teams will emerge as the champion this weekend but you’ll have to tune in yourself to find out which team that will be.
